Purpose of the Environmental Health Division
The purpose of Environmental Health is to provide a public health approach to prevention and control of environmental contaminants and disease while making Carteret County a healthier place to live by limiting the spread of disease through diverse environmental health programs and providing protection from potential illness through the regulation of environmental factors that may threaten the public's health.
Environmental Health Services include:
Permitting, inspection, and approval of septic tanks systems
Compliance inspections of permitted wastewater systems
Permitting, inspection and grading of regulated food and lodging establishments. Establishments that are regulated include:
Restaurants
Motels/hotels
Food stands
Child Care Centers
Public Swimming Pools
Tattoo Parlors
Investigation of food borne illness outbreaks
Investigations concerning elevated blood lead levels in children
Investigation of public health nuisance complaints
Water sampling and testing
Food safety education classes
The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources provides technical guidance and delegation of authority.
Pest Management Services include:
Animal Control
Mosquito Control
How can I receive services from Environmental Health?
Most services require an application. Applications are taken primarily by visiting the Environmental Health Division but can also be faxed or mailed.
What to bring with you?
You will need to have certain types of information to submit an application or service request depending on the service requested. It is advised that you contact the Environmental Health Division to inquire about what information may be needed prior to visiting the office.
What fees are involved? Fees vary according to the type of service requested. Fees can be paid by cash or check. All fees must be paid at the time of the service request.
